Black Ops II - Leveling Up System Explained!

We are coming ever closer to the release of Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 and there is still heaps of content to talk about. One major factor of the game will be how we rank up and what we get for doing it, luckily David Vonderhaar of Treyarch took to the Black Ops 2 forums recently, explaining the whole process from start to finish.
For starters, each prestige level will feature 55 levels, with the amount of experience points needed within similar to that of Call of Duty: World At War. Vahn did state however, it will be very easy to level up with the never-ending amount of XP from medals you collect, challenges you complete and extra bonus XP from leveling up guns.
Like previous Call of Duty titles, once you reach level 4 you unlock the Create-a-Class feature (read more about the Pick 10 Create-a-Class system). As for unlocking the guns and equipment in-game, every time you level up you will receive a token as a reward, so by reaching level 4 you will have 4 tokens, simple right! These tokens can be used to unlock a range of hardware, but luckily when you reach level 4, Treyarch have some free guns and equipment to get you on your way, effectively one item from each category.

Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 Pick 10 Create-a-Class System
  • 1 Assault Rifle
  • 1 SMG
  • 1 LMG
  • 1 Shotgun
  • 1 Sniper Rifle
  • 1 Perk from each of the 3 perk categories
  • 1 lethal grenade
  • 1 tactical grenade/equipment
Once you reach level 10 things will start to become more settled and a pattern will emerge. Every time you reach an extra 3 levels, it will be seen as a major rank change and you will be rewarded for reaching it with a gun or “something else”.
In general, it goes like this.
  • Level 10 – Weapon + Something Else
  • Level 11 – Equipment (either lethal or tactical).
  • Level 12 – Scorestreak
“This pattern then repeats through all 55 levels with some minor statistical variations or bonuses when they make sense and because the math can’t be perfect,” said Vahn.
The new system has gone down well with fans, which is good as it’s a major feature in the game.
